Since its inception in 1971, the dramatic evolution of Computed Tomography (CT) has led the continued growth of CT’s role in patient care.

Canon Medical has pioneered numerous technological innovations that have shaped the clinical advancement of CT, including Wide‑Area Detectors, Ultra‑High Resolution imaging, and Deep Learning Reconstruction. In partnership with Redlen Technologies Inc. (Redlen), a Canon Group company and global leader in photon counting detector design and manufacturing, Canon has introduced its Photon Counting CT (PCCT) technology.

Our vision is to leverage Redlen’s state‑of‑the‑art Photon Counting CT technology, combined with Canon Medical’s leadership in system design, software, and image reconstruction, to elevate the quality of medical imaging for patients worldwide.

What is Photon Counting CT?*

Photon counting CT uses a semiconductor material to directly convert each incident photon into an electric signal, which is then quickly read out by detector circuitry to effectively "count" each photon individually.

A PPCT measures each photon and it's energy directly, whereas with a conventional Energy Integrating Detector (EID) the incident photons are not directly converted to signal.

The Aquilion ONE / INSIGHT Edition uses a detector that is 0.5 mm and uses deep learning reconstruction trained with the Aquilion Precision data to produce Super Resolution2 images based on the reconstruction, not based on detection."
